Resort 2011: Who'll Be Wearing What Next Pre-Spring

It's resort week in New York City -- in truth the resort shows have been going on for almost a month, but these past two weeks have welcomed a flood of spring clothing to Manhattan. Everyone from Alber Elbaz to Marc's in town to herald what's becoming the most successful, and thus profitable, season.

Resort collections live in stores longest, and they foreshadow the spring collections, which will bow in September, but they don't actually hit shelves until next December -- which means they're a good indicator of who will be wearing what come Christmas vacation (unless of course you're Liya Kebede who already wore Proenza Schouler resort to last week's CFDA ceremony).

Who's likely to adopt the top looks, after the jump.

After two seasons of subdued neutrals, Phoebe Philo went color crazy for Céline resort. She showed head to toe prints and bright jackets, but the already classic box bag in neon snakeskin was like the maraschino cherry atop the best ice cream sundae. Who'll wear it? Probably everyone from Rachel Bilson to Katie Grand -- it's the perfect pop for that winter to spring transition.

Balenciaga's candy colored resort separates are more playful than Nicolas Ghesquière's recent work (though the structural shoes remain). The designers muse, Charlotte Gainsbourg, probably already has the prints hanging in her closet, but come December that pink suit belongs on Cate Blanchett.

Givenchy's chunky heels balanced out Ricardo Tisci's feminine, heavily laced dresses. They're the kinds of shoes bound to pop up everywhere. Ciara will probably have first dibs given her close relationship to the designer, but then they'll take to red carpets everywhere on the feet of stars like Chloë Sevigny and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Anne Hathaway usually sticks to classics -- think Marchesa gowns and Valentino sparkles -- but this ruffled yellow skirt from Chris Benz' resort collection screams her name. She'd be smart to embrace young designers, and this is a great place to start.

It's easy to layer in the winter, a necessity really -- but come spring and sunshine layering becomes a fine art and Marcus Wainwright and David Neville mastered it in their 2011 resort collection for Rag & Bone. Tailored vests replace wool jackets and this skirt's built in layers offer volume creatively, without the girliness of tulle and ruffles. There's some Kate Bosworth mixed in with that carefree Olsen look, but this will be most popular, or most useful, among New York's fashion-loving crowd.

Jason Wu's straw boater hats topped off a stellar resort collection. It's the kind of hat associated with Eliza Doolittle and Venetian canals, but could be a welcome respite from the fedora's reign. Gossip Girl's Jessica Szhor should be an early adopter.

Diane Kruger may be Chanel's most loyal customer, but Louis Vuitton's ladylike pastel gloves belong on the actress' tiny hands next year. If gloves are going to make a comeback, she'll have to lead the way.

Hermes Lost Creative Director Jean Paul

Nothing remains constant. People who we traditionally associate with certain fashion houses leave them and new designers come to rein. On the one hand, this is great because new blood makes difference we all need from time to time. But on the other hand, we get accustomed to something and feel really upset when realise we no longer have it.

This happened when Alexander McQueen died and now it touches Hermes who has lost genius Jean Paul Gaultier as their creative director. The iconic fashion designer has been working for Hermes since 2003.

The reason why he made up his mind to stop designing for the label is that he wants to pay more attention to his own brand. AlthoughHermes family feel very grateful to Jean Paul for his great job they can’t but feel frustrated by the fact he won’t create for them any more.

In a statement, Hermes said:

Hermes is deeply grateful to Jean Paul Gaultier for his outstanding creative contribution during these seven years.”

Jean Paul will be replaced by Lacoste creative director Christophe Lemaire in the job at the French luxury goods company. However, the changes will actually take place after the spring/summer 2011 collection is unveiled later this year. So, we will have one more chance to see Gaultier’s creations for Hermes.

Hermes and Jean Paul Gaultier won’t break the collaboration completely as Hermes owns a 45 per cent stake in Gaultier’s line.
